Cologne, March 5, 2025
Comau participates in the Global Giga-Casting Congress 2025 , the first international conference dedicated to new giga-casting technologies in the automotive industry, held March 5-6, 2025 at the Campus Center of the University of Kassel.
During the two-day event Comau showcases new applications and innovations, including cutting-edge robotics and machining solutions for casting and production lines.
These solutions address the challenges that many manufacturing plants have, such as the adoption of advanced machinery, IoT devices, and data analytic tools, while making it easier for them to integrate new technologies into existing processes.
Of particular interest, SmartReach Comau is a next-generation system that combines the precision of a machine tool with the agility of 5-axis articulation. The cutting-edge solution was specifically created for machining large and complex parts such as Aluminum Mega casting underbodies, battery trays, and aerospace structural components, and bridges the gap between operational costs and quality control by ensuring high stiffness and repeatability while maintaining consistent quality across the entire machining line.
Driven by a CNC controller utilizing G-code, SmartReach Comau ensures precise and efficient operations. The machine system is equipped with fully integrated cables and hoses, enhancing its streamlined design. Additionally, SmartReach Comau features a high-performance spindle, making it an excellent choice for challenging machining tasks.
Thanks to its modular architecture, SmartReach Comau can operate smoothly in confined spaces that traditional machines cannot easily access, enabling it to improve overall equipment efficiency (OEE) and optimize time and costs. Comau’s SmartReach machine tool is well-suited for the automotive industry, but also within aerospace, energy and other sectors where dynamism, rigidity and precision is required. In addition, SmartReach Comau was developed in full compliance with Comau’s ESG strategy, so that energy consumption during machining operations is much lower than traditional vertical or horizontal CNC machines. As a result, energy savings can be as high as 40%.
Comau has solid experience in giga-casting processing lines to major automotive manufacturers of electric cars. Besides advanced and proven automation systems of assembly solutions, Comau proposes SmartReach to realize high performance and flexible machining of giga-casting parts processing with added value in comparison to the competition.
“The Global Giga-Casting Congress 2025 represents a valuable opportunity for Comau to strengthen our leadership in giga-casting technologies. This event serves as a multichannel platform to highlight our expertise and introduce new solutions for the automotive industry and beyond. In this respect, SmartReach Comau reflects our response to the requirements of our customers who demand increasingly high flexibility and precision. Our presence in Germany also enables us to meet customers’ needs locally while leveraging our global footprint.”

Comau’s presence in germany
Comau has been present in Germany for more than 25 years, with headquarters in Cologne and a growing team of industrial automation experts that is well-positioned to meet the needs of the local market.
Throughout the years, Comau has always worked actively to meet its customers’ needs by combining technology, sensing, collaborative robotics and strategic automation. The approach reflects an interconnected production process supported by cutting-edge digital tools, enabling technologies and intelligent industrial robotics. Of particular interest are the wearable passive exoskeleton MATE, which support workers’ upper and lower limbs respectively, while collaborative robots such as the Racer-5 COBOT safely avoid human-machine collisions thanks to state-of-the-art sensors and technologies. Similarly, the Racer-5 SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTS high-performance industrial robot is specifically designed for pharmaceutical, health and beauty, electronics, food and beverages, battery manufacturing, and other clean environments that require best-in-class productivity with minimal risk of contamination.
In addition to working with many of the country’s top-tier automakers for traditional and electric vehicle manufacturing, Comau Germany is active in other important industries from aerospace to general manufacturing. Indeed, the company’s attention to the specific needs of German enterprises includes collaborations with companies such as Siemens, with whom Comau has implemented universal programming protocols to fully integrate its robot family with the Siemens SIMATIC Robot Library and SINUMERIK Run MyRobot /Direct Control.
Comau also collaborates with the Fraunhofer Institutes in addition to several German Universities, including DFKI in Kaiserslautern, TUM in Munich and Aachen University, on innovation topics through European-funded projects. The company has collaborated with Heidelberg University for a joint research initiative to study new application areas for wearable robotics.
