Valentina Ferrara and Damiano Morra talk about how this new technology was born, which they contributed to, and their work at Comau.
Valentina, what is your experience at Comau?
I joined the Robotics Software Development team at Comau 12 years ago and the C5G Open control was the theme of my Master’s thesis in Industrial Automation and the project work I led in the company. I am proud to have contributed to the development of a technology that has allowed me to learn and experiment with new ways of working in a complex industry. Working at Comau for many years, with passionate and competent professionals, has taught me to see robotics with humility and with the desire to learn from colleagues, growing together as a team. This was also the case for the development of the new control. It’s this way of working that continues to attract new talent to Comau, who want to grow and learn from every project, looking to the future.
The C5G Open control is the forerunner of the new Comau control software. What are its characteristics?
C5G Open control connects the industrial, research and education sectors, because it is the result of open technology developed by a company committed to innovation and thanks to collaboration with high-end realities, with a view to sharing and enriching each other. This vision has allowed us to design a control that can be used on any industrial robot, ensuring high performance with equal safety and operational reliability. Thanks to this solution, our most experienced customers can access Comau robot system software to communicate to the machine position, speed and targets to be achieved extremely quickly, controlling and modifying the algorithms of its movement. For these features, the C5G Open has been used by leading European and global research centers over the years and its applications have been the basis of countless doctoral theses and scientific publications.
Damiano, what do you do at Comau?
I am a Robotics Software Engineer and work with Comau’s Software Architecture team to design and build next-generation robot controls, such as the new Open Controller. When Valentina entrusted me with this project, I discovered the importance of developing a product with value from multiple perspectives. Every member of our team has put a unique set of skills, experiences and perspectives into play. Embracing this diversity enables creative and comprehensive solutions.
What are the features and benefits of the new Comau open control software?
The new Open Controller is an updated version of the C5G Open software that can be seamlessly integrated with any external computer. A feature that improves workflow and makes it more flexible to use, as this product is often requested by academics and researchers. The Open Controller also provides additional control algorithms to ensure more advanced control actions, greater accuracy and efficiency, and to meet customer needs we have expanded many of its capabilities.
